Just after 1000 hrs members of Engine 30, Truck 17 and Ambulance 30 were gathering in the day room for today’s company drill on forcible entry. The surprise of Spring-like weather found the windows up and the warm, gentle breeze flowing in from the direction of East Capital Street. As the lecture began on the concepts of outward opening doors, the education process was shattered by a squeal of tires and the scream of civilians. As members looked toward the open windows gun shots rang out on Central Ave next to the firehouse. The target vehicle jumped the curve in the rear of 4800 East Capital Street (side note, this is the rear of the same building Engine 30 member Hakim Carroll received a gunshot wound to his arm during a medical local) and smashed into several parked cars. Another car sped off as people fled in every direction. Police were requested and a further recon of the scene found no victims. Approx. 30 min. later however, Engine 30 was alerted for one shot in the leg just a block away. As the excitement died down and things returned to as normal as they get in The Heights, Truck Company 17 traveled to the South East section of the first due to do fire safety training for several Kindergarten class at the new KIPP charter school. Students received training in the art of stop, drop and roll, the importance of a common meeting place for their family, the intricacies of the interior of the fire truck and lastly not to be scared of a firefighter in full PPE that comes to rescue them. The teachers and students all had a great time and thanked the members for their time. Lets see what the night may bring…
