At 2151 Engine 30 was alerted for a reported Medical Local at 4800 East Capital Street, a newly constructed building next to Engine 30’s quarters. The call was received because concerned family members could not get their loved one to answer the phone and knew he had medical issues. Engine 30’s crew arrived on the scene at the apartment and made multiple attempts to have the patient answer the door with no response. Engine 30’s officer advised communications to try a call back and again no answer. With growing concern for the victim the decision was made to force the apartment door to locate the patient who was presumably having a medical emergency. One crew member began to force the door to the apartment, as the door flung open shots rang out from inside the apartment. The crew dove for cover as bullets riddled the door and surrounding wood frame. As the crew regrouped and assessed the situation it was discovered that one member had received a gunshot wound to the left bicep. The Officer from Engine 30 immediately advised communications of the situation and requested additional resources. The wounded crewmember was transported to a local trauma center as the Metropolitan Police began a several hour standoff with the gunman. The gunman would later surrender without further incident. The Firefighter from Engine 30 is recovering with a non-life threatening injury.
