Platoon #1 runs a car vs. tractor trailer  collision with entrapment on Southern Ave.  And then 24 hours later Platoon #2 runs the collision on New York Ave. with entrapment.

Engine 30 #1 ran the first collision on Southern Ave. SE where a vehicle collided into the rear of a tractor trailer, caught fire, and resulted in the death of the vehicle's driver.  An off-duty Virginia firefighter passing by, attempted to remove the victim from the vehicle, but was unsuccessful.  Once the fire was extinguished by Engine 30, it was determined to leave the victim and the vehicle where it was until the crime scene was thoroughly investigated.  Rescue Squad 3 was later called back to extricate the victim.

VISIT FROM RECRUIT FLAG
Thursday, November 6, 2008
-
Engine 30 received an unexpected visitor the other day from Recruit Class 357's Class Flag.  According to the Flag, the class left it unattended; cold and lonely.  It also stated it was angry at its neglect.  The flag stated the only place to go to have a good time was Engine Company 30.  Class 357, it was truly a pleasure having your flag as a guest.

In other news, FF Cl*me's (* used so he can remain anonymous) helmet was located this morning upon arrival of the next  shift.  He has managed to impress us all yet again with the new wedge he invented.  It is called the Cli*me wedge.  Expect to see this submitted on a local training site near you!

FIRE SHOWING FOR 17 TRUCK BLOCKS FROM THE FIREHOUSE
Friday, October 31, 2008
-
As members of “The Heights” were just settling down for lunch after a rash of morning responses, the members were alerted to the sound of shouting on the front ramp of the firehouse. The crews entered the apparatus bay to see several cars on the front ramp of the firehouse and a plume of smoke issuing several blocks away. Citizens advised there was a bad apartment fire on Central Ave and that people were inside. With Engine 30 OOS the crews from 17 Truck and Ambulance 30 mounted the apparatus as the house alert was activated. The members responded out of the firehouse towards the column of smoke, a crowd of onlookers cheered the brave members of “The Heights” from the sidewalks infront of the firehouse. As Truck 17 entered the block heavy smoke was carrying across Central Ave and a large crowd was pointing to the Charlie Side windows saying people were trapped. Truck 17 positioned on the C-Charlie side to find a 4 story brick apartment building with fire in 2 windows on the second floor and getting ready to extend to the third. Exterior crews immediately went to work throwing 135’ of ground ladders to sides C and D, and completely ventilating horizontally. The Roof team made their way to the roof, opening the hatch, checking the A-Alpha side and opening up the roof. The interior team conducted a rapid primary search proving negative, controlled the fire using doors and assisted Engine 27 in the fire room. Interior crews encountered heavy fire in one unit with extension into the hallway and third floor apartment. Crews made a quick knock on the fire and controlled it to the original apartment. Command 2 held Engine 27, Trucks 17 and 13, and Ambulance 30 to assist investigators and conduct overhaul. Units returned to service to see what else Halloween in The Heights has in store for 2008.

Body found in Watts Branch
Thursday, October 30, 2008

thanks to WJLA.com

http://www.wjla.com/news/stories/1008/566013.html

WASHINGTON - Some local students made a gruesome discovery Thursday while participating in an annual community service day.

Every fall, the junior class here at the field school does some type of community service-like working at a local food bank. This year, they had an experience they won't soon forget.

A total of 67 students and teachers from the Field School in Northwest Washington ventured out on a community service project along the Anacostia River.

They came to pick up trash and clear debris. They ended up finding the body of a man along the Watts Branch stream.

"You don't wish that on anyone that they will discover something like that out in the day, but at the same time you think about the individual who was found and their suffering. And this is part of why we go out into the world," said Dale Johnson, Head of Field School.

The students alerted a chaperone who called police.

Yolanda McDaniels lives nearby. She says cases like this make her watch her boys even closer.

"If I'm not outside, they're not going outside. Simple as that. I can't have them going out, it's dangerous out here now, these days," said McDaniels.

Police say the body showed no signs of trauma and may have been the result of a drug overdose.

"There's plenty of needles and stuff that we have to walk around every day. There's a lot of drug abuse that goes on just sitting at the lights even around here," said Simon Green who works nearby.

Authorities are now awaiting the results of an autopsy.

At the Field School, there are no plans to abandon future community service projects even after this difficult life lesson.

RETIREMENT PARTY

"Platoon #1 Works"

Join the brothers and sisters in honoring the following members who have retired over the past year:  James Blair, James Hayden, Donald Kevan, John Lee, and Royer Ridgeway.

Located at Upper Marlboro Fire Hall and starts at 17:30 hours.  Enjoy a great buffet dinner, war stories and roasting of the retirees, and a beer truck with a gift that keeps on giving.

These retirement parties are for all members to attend (from "Old Heads" to "Probies"), so you don\\\'t need to know any of these brothers who are being honored.  They are a time to show respect for those who have dedicated their lives to this Department and to the Service.  It\\\'s an opportunity to catch up with old classmates, meet members from other platoons and battalions that you normally don\\\'t get to see.

THANKS TO THE BROTHERS AND SISTERS WHO CONTINUALLY PUT IN THE TIME AND EFFORT TO PUT ON THESE EVENTS... YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE!!!
